Te Iwa o Matariki (The Nine Stars of Matariki) – Reclaimed Christchurch Slate Serving Board

Crafted from reclaimed natural roofing slate salvaged from a Christchurch building following the Canterbury earthquakes, this serving board represents a meeting of history, craftsmanship and tradition.

Recovered from a building on the corner of Colombo Street and Moorhouse Avenue, the slate has been carefully cut, hand-finished and laser engraved in Geraldine, South Canterbury. The natural dressed edges have been retained wherever possible, preserving the character and authenticity of the original material.

The design features Te Iwa o Matariki, the nine stars associated with Matariki, the Māori New Year. A time of remembrance, reflection and renewal, Matariki encourages us to honour the past while looking forward to the future—making it a fitting design for a material that has itself been given a second life.

Each piece is unique, carrying subtle variations in texture, colour and edge detail that reflect its history as reclaimed roofing slate. Whether used as a serving board, displayed as a decorative piece, or gifted as a lasting reminder of Aotearoa, every board tells a story of resilience, renewal and craftsmanship.
