Description

Bellbird – Korimako

He waiata nō te ngahere — the clear song that brings the forest to life.

Gentle yet persistent, the Korimako (Bellbird) is one of Aotearoa’s most treasured forest voices. Its liquid, chiming call has long been associated with renewal, balance, and the quiet rhythms of the natural world.

This artwork is crafted from solid New Zealand Rimu, salvaged from a central Christchurch building damaged and later demolished following the February 2011 earthquake. Formerly used as display shelving, the timber has been carefully selected for its exceptional condition—free from nail holes, laminates, glue joins, or composite construction. Each piece is made from a single, uninterrupted block of rimu, allowing the natural grain to speak clearly and honestly.

The Korimako is laser-engraved with flowing detail, framed by Kōwhai, whose bright yellow flowers are a vital nectar source for Bellbirds. Light and shadow are carefully balanced to preserve fine detail while creating a refined yet confident statement wall art piece—calm, grounded, and deeply connected to place.
