Description
He tohu maumahara ki Aotearoa — a keepsake of New Zealand, shaped by land, journey, and home.
Designed as a celebration of Aotearoa, this piece brings together the outline of New Zealand with flowing Māori-inspired detail, native birds, flora, and a traditional compass rose. It speaks to connection — to place, to travel, to memory, and to the landscapes that make New Zealand so instantly recognisable.
This artwork is crafted from solid New Zealand Rimu, salvaged from a central Christchurch building damaged and later demolished following the February 2011 earthquake. Once used as display shelving, the timber has been carefully selected for its exceptional quality—free from nail holes, laminates, glue joins, or composite construction. Each piece is made from a single, uninterrupted section of Rimu, preserving both strength and story within the grain.
The Aotearoa design is laser-engraved with careful attention to balance and detail, allowing the map, compass, birds, and botanical elements to sit cleanly within the square format. The open space lets the natural warmth of the Rimu remain central, while the fine linework creates a meaningful statement piece for anyone with a connection to New Zealand.
