Description

Tūī – Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae

He manu kōrero, he reo rangatira — a bird of many voices, carrying strength and presence.

Bold, intelligent, and unmistakably Aotearoa, the Tūī is a symbol of confidence, vitality, and song. Known for its iridescent feathers and distinctive poi at the throat, the Tūī brings movement and mana wherever it appears.

This artwork is crafted from solid New Zealand Rimu, salvaged from a central Christchurch building damaged and later demolished following the February 2011 earthquake. Formerly used as display shelving, the timber has been carefully selected for its exceptional condition—free from nail holes, laminates, glue joins, or composite construction. Each piece is made from a single, uninterrupted block of Rimu, allowing the natural grain to tell its story.

The Tūī design is precision laser-engraved to honour both the bird and the timber it is carved from. Light and shadow are carefully balanced to preserve fine detail while creating a strong, contemporary statement wall art piece—rich in story, texture, and meaning.
