Description

He manu rangatira o te ngahere — a noble bird of the forest, carrying life through the trees.

Graceful, distinctive, and deeply connected to the ngahere of Aotearoa, the Kererū is one of New Zealand’s most treasured native birds. Known for its soft wingbeats, full rounded form, and important role in spreading native seeds, the Kererū brings a sense of abundance, renewal, and quiet strength to the forest.

This artwork is crafted from solid New Zealand Rimu, salvaged from a central Christchurch building damaged and later demolished following the February 2011 earthquake. Once used as display shelving, the timber has been carefully selected for its exceptional quality—free from nail holes, laminates, glue joins, or composite construction. Each piece is made from a single, uninterrupted section of Rimu, preserving both strength and story within the grain.

The Kererū is laser-engraved with careful attention to contrast and line detail, capturing the bird’s rounded body, layered feathers, and calm presence without overwhelming the natural warmth of the timber. Framed by Karaka leaves and fruit, the design celebrates the connection between bird, forest, and seed — a reminder of the living cycle that sustains Aotearoa’s native bush.
