Description

Fantail – Pīwakawaka

He manu hihiko, he karere — lively, curious, and always close at hand.

Playful, inquisitive, and full of character, the Pīwakawaka (Fantail) is one of Aotearoa’s most beloved native birds. Known for its fluttering movements and friendly presence, the Fantail is often seen darting through the forest, weaving effortlessly between light and shadow.

This artwork is crafted from solid New Zealand Rimu, salvaged from a central Christchurch building damaged and later demolished following the February 2011 earthquake. Previously used as display shelving, the timber has been carefully selected for its pristine condition—free from nail holes, laminates, glue joins, or composite construction. Each piece is cut from a single solid section of Rimu, allowing the natural grain to remain uninterrupted and authentic.

The Pīwakawaka is laser-engraved with fine, energetic linework, capturing the movement and personality the bird is known for. Framed by native foliage, the design balances detail and negative space to create a warm, engaging statement wall art piece—light in feel, yet rich in story and craftsmanship.
